Memphis, Saqqara, and Dahshur: Egypt's Original Pyramid Fields

Before Giza, there was Saqqara — Egypt's first pyramid, its oldest necropolis, and a day trip that draws a fraction of the crowd for a comparable amount of history.

Giza gets the crowds, but the pyramids there weren't Egypt's first. That distinction belongs to Saqqara, about half an hour south, where the earliest large-scale stone monument in the world still stands.

Saqqara and the Step Pyramid

The Step Pyramid of Djoser, built around 2670 BCE for Egypt's Third Dynasty, predates Giza's Great Pyramid by roughly a century and represents the first time Egyptians built primarily in stone rather than mudbrick at this scale. Its six stacked stone tiers, designed by the architect Imhotep, mark the actual starting point of pyramid-building as a tradition — everything at Giza follows from what was worked out here first.

Dahshur's Two Experiments

A short drive from Saqqara, Dahshur holds the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid, both built under the pharaoh Sneferu. The Bent Pyramid changes angle partway up — a visible record of ancient builders adjusting their approach mid-construction — while the Red Pyramid, built afterward with lessons learned, is considered the first successful true smooth-sided pyramid in Egypt, predating Giza's Great Pyramid.

Memphis: The Capital Itself

Memphis was ancient Egypt's capital for much of the Old Kingdom, and while little of the city itself survives above ground, its open-air museum holds a colossal fallen statue of Ramesses II and an alabaster sphinx, giving a sense of the city's scale even in fragments.

Why It's Worth the Extra Day

This whole area draws far fewer visitors than Giza, which means more room to actually look at what you're seeing — including, at Saqqara, some of the best-preserved painted tomb reliefs anywhere near Cairo.
