The Great Pyramid of Giza, built for the pharaoh Khufu around 2560 BCE, is made of roughly 2.3 million limestone and granite blocks and remained the tallest man-made structure on Earth for nearly 3,800 years. How exactly it was built is one of the most studied questions in archaeology — and while much is understood, the full picture still isn't settled.
Who Actually Built It
Contrary to a persistent myth, the pyramids were not built by enslaved foreign labor. Archaeological evidence, including a nearby workers' town with bakeries, medical facilities, and worker burial sites, points to a large organized workforce of skilled Egyptian laborers, likely working in rotating shifts, fed and housed by the state as part of a genuine national construction project.
Moving the Stone
The leading theories involve ramps — straight, spiraling, or internal — combined with sledges, and evidence from other sites suggests workers wetted the sand in front of sledges to reduce friction, a technique depicted in ancient tomb paintings showing exactly this method in use. Precisely which ramp configuration was used for the Great Pyramid specifically remains debated among Egyptologists, since no definitive ramp structure has survived intact.
The Precision Itself
What's not in dispute is the sheer precision involved — the pyramid's base is level to within a few centimeters across its entire footprint, and its sides align to true north with remarkable accuracy for a structure built without modern surveying tools. That precision, more than the size alone, is what continues to draw serious scholarly attention to how it was actually achieved.
