Islamic and Coptic Cairo: A Walking Guide to Old Cairo

Beyond the Pyramids, Cairo holds a thousand years of Islamic architecture and some of Christianity's oldest surviving churches — both walkable, both often skipped.

Most first-time visitors spend their Cairo time entirely at Giza and the new museum, which means skipping a part of the city that tells a completely different story — medieval Islamic Cairo and, a short distance away, Coptic Cairo's cluster of ancient churches.

Islamic Cairo

Centered around the Citadel of Saladin and the sprawling market of Khan el-Khalili, this district holds one of the largest collections of medieval Islamic architecture anywhere in the world — mosques, madrasas, and mausoleums built across nearly a thousand years, many still in active use. The Citadel itself, with the Mohamed Ali Mosque's Ottoman-style domes overlooking the city, is the natural anchor point for a walk through the area.

Coptic Cairo

A few kilometers south, Coptic Cairo is a walled, largely pedestrian quarter holding some of the oldest churches in Christianity, including the Hanging Church, suspended over the gatehouse of a Roman fortress, and the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, built over a site associated with the Holy Family's traditional stay in Egypt. The Ben Ezra Synagogue, one of Cairo's oldest, sits in the same small area.

Walking Both in One Day

The two districts are close enough by car to combine into a single, full day — Islamic Cairo in the morning, when the light through Khan el-Khalili's covered alleys is best, and Coptic Cairo in the afternoon, when its narrow lanes are quieter. A knowledgeable local guide makes a real difference here, since much of what makes both districts interesting isn't obvious from the architecture alone.
