Is the Luxor Hot Air Balloon Ride Safe?

A sunrise hot-air balloon over Luxor's West Bank, drifting above the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple as the sun comes up, is one of the most-photographed experiences in Egypt — and a reasonable question before booking one is whether it's actually safe.

What Actually Happened

Luxor's ballooning industry has had two serious incidents worth being honest about — a multi-balloon collision in 2009, and a more serious accident in 2013 in which a balloon caught fire after landing and resulted in 19 deaths, among the worst hot-air balloon accidents on record anywhere. Both incidents led to real scrutiny of the industry's safety practices at the time.

What Changed Afterward

In the years since, Egypt's Civil Aviation Authority tightened oversight of balloon operators significantly — stricter licensing, additional mandatory pilot training, limits on how many balloons can fly simultaneously, and more rigorous equipment inspection requirements. Today, ballooning in Luxor is generally regarded as safe with established, licensed operators, and it remains one of the region's most popular tourist activities for exactly that reason.

How to Choose an Operator

The clearest safety signal is an established, licensed operator with a long operating history, rather than the cheapest option available on the day — newer or budget operators are generally considered a relatively higher risk within the industry. Flights are also weather-dependent and routinely cancelled or postponed by operators when conditions aren't right, which is itself a sign of a safety-conscious operation rather than an inconvenience to push past.
