Is Scuba Diving in the Red Sea Worth It?

The Red Sea is consistently ranked among the world's best diving destinations. Here's what actually makes it worth the trip, and what a first-timer should know.

Divers talk about the Red Sea the way they talk about very few other destinations — exceptional visibility, warm water nearly year-round, and coral reef systems that have largely avoided the bleaching damage seen elsewhere. For most travelers weighing whether to add it to an Egypt trip, the answer is yes.

What Makes It Stand Out

Visibility routinely exceeds 20 meters, water temperatures stay comfortable for most of the year, and the reef walls drop dramatically close to shore in places like Ras Mohammed National Park, putting healthy coral and a wide range of marine life within easy reach of shore or a short boat ride. Wreck diving is another major draw, particularly around the Strait of Tiran and the well-known Thistlegorm wreck near Sharm.

For Beginners

You don't need to be a certified diver to get a real sense of it — snorkeling over the same reefs delivers a surprising amount of what makes the Red Sea special, and PADI-certified introductory dives are widely available for first-timers through licensed dive centers. For anyone considering full certification, Egypt is one of the more affordable and accessible places in the world to do it.

Best Time to Go

The Red Sea is diveable nearly year-round, with water temperatures rarely dropping uncomfortably even in winter. Summer offers the warmest water and best visibility for most sites, while spring and autumn avoid the peak heat on land between dives.
