Assouan incarne l'Égypte dans ce qu'elle a de plus nubien — une ville plus paisible et verdoyante, bâtie autour de la première cataracte du Nil. Deux jours permettent de visiter le temple de Philae, le Haut Barrage et de faire un tour en félouque autour de l'île Éléphantine, suivis d'un trajet en voiture tôt le matin vers le sud jusqu'à Abou Simbel, où la façade colossale de Ramsès II fait toujours face au lever du soleil.
