Hurghada vs. Sharm El Sheikh vs. Dahab: Which Red Sea Town Fits You?

Egypt's three main Red Sea towns aren't interchangeable — one's family-friendly and mainland, one's polished resort territory, and one's a laid-back diving village. Here's the real difference.

All three sit on the Red Sea, all three offer excellent diving and snorkeling, and beyond that, they're genuinely different kinds of places.

Hurghada

On the Egyptian mainland rather than the Sinai peninsula, Hurghada is the most family-friendly and generally the most affordable of the three, often running 10 to 30 percent cheaper than Sharm for comparable resorts. It's a bigger, livelier town with a wide range of hotel styles and a well-developed selection of boat-based diving and snorkeling trips.

Sharm El Sheikh

Sharm, on the southern tip of the Sinai peninsula, tends toward larger, more polished resort properties and is generally considered to have the best boat-accessible diving of the three, with easy access to Ras Mohammed National Park and the wreck-diving sites of the Strait of Tiran.

Dahab

About an hour north of Sharm, Dahab has a completely different character — laid-back, low-rise, and built around shore diving rather than resort life. Its biggest draw is walk-in access to world-famous sites like the Blue Hole, reachable without a boat, which makes it the pick for travelers who want a slower pace and easy, frequent diving over five-star amenities.

So Which One?

Traveling with family and want the most straightforward, well-rounded resort experience — Hurghada. Want the best all-around diving with polished resort comfort — Sharm. Want a quieter, more bohemian base built specifically around diving — Dahab. All three are part of South Sinai or the Red Sea coast's normally functioning tourist areas, not the parts of the region under any travel advisory.
