Upper Egypt / Nile Valley
Aswan
Egypt's most relaxed river city
Felucca sails at sunset, Nubian villages, and the High Dam — Aswan moves at the Nile's own pace, and is the natural base for visiting Abu Simbel further south.

Nubian Village Visit in Aswan
Upriver from Aswan by motorboat to Gharb Soheil, where the houses are painted indigo, ochre and rose, and the Nubian language is still the one spoken at home. Tea in a family house, a walk through the lanes, and the boat ride back down the river as the light goes.
Abu Simbel Excursion from Aswan
Four seated colossi of Ramesses II, twenty metres high, cut into a cliff at the far southern edge of Egypt — then sawn into a thousand blocks in the 1960s and rebuilt sixty metres higher to keep Lake Nasser off them. It is the single most impressive thing in the country, and it is a long way to go. Worth every hour.
