Abu Simbel
Ramses II's colossal monument to himself
Four 20-meter statues of Ramses II, carved directly into a mountainside and relocated stone by stone in the 1960s to save them from the rising waters of Lake Nasser. A long day trip from Aswan, and worth every minute of the drive.

Experiences (1)
Abu Simbel Excursion from Aswan
Four seated colossi of Ramesses II, twenty metres high, cut into a cliff at the far southern edge of Egypt — then sawn into a thousand blocks in the 1960s and rebuilt sixty metres higher to keep Lake Nasser off them. It is the single most impressive thing in the country, and it is a long way to go. Worth every hour.
