Avant Gizeh, il y avait Saqqarah — la pyramide à degrés de Djéser, construite vers 2630 av. J.-C., est la plus ancienne structure majeure en pierre au monde. Cette journée la combine avec les pyramides rhombouïdale et rouge de Dahchour, édifiées une génération plus tôt alors que les architectes cherchaient comment bâtir une vraie pyramide, et Memphis, la première capitale de l'Égypte ancienne, aujourd'hui musée en plein air.
