Wadi Degla: Canyon Hike, Sunset and Stars
A limestone canyon inside the city limits. Wadi Degla is a protected area at the edge of Maadi — a dry riverbed cut through fossil-bearing rock, walked out in the afternoon, turned around for sunset on the canyon wall, and dark enough afterwards for a sky Cairo normally hides.
Several hours walking a dry limestone canyon on loose rock, with no shade and no water on the route.
Where You’ll Go
What You’ll Do
- 1
Into the wadi
Through the protectorate gate and out along the canyon floor, with the geology and the fossils that make this a protected area rather than a quarry.
- 2
The walk out
A few hours along the dry riverbed, as far as the group's pace takes it. The canyon walls rise as you go.
- 3
Sunset on the rock
Turning for the light on the canyon wall, which is the hour this place is for.
- 4
Stars, and back
Time under the sky once it is properly dark, then the drive back into the city — which is startlingly short.
Included
- ✓Private transfer from and back to your hotel in Cairo or Giza
- ✓An English-speaking guide for the walk
- ✓Protectorate entry fees
- ✓Drinking water for the route
Good to Know
The practical truth about this one — timings, conditions, and what we can’t promise.
- Wadi Degla is a declared protectorate and the rules are the protectorate's, not ours: entry fees are set at the gate and we confirm the current ones for your date rather than quoting a figure here.
- Camping overnight is allowed only in designated areas and we have not confirmed the current permit process. If you want to stay the night, ask when you enquire and we will find out what is possible for your date — we will not promise it in advance.
- No shade, no water on the route and no phone signal in parts of the canyon. Closed walking shoes, a hat, and more water than you think.
- Loose rock underfoot the whole way. This is a walk rather than a scramble, but it is not a stroll, and it is not suitable in sandals.
- October to April is the season for this. A summer afternoon in a limestone canyon is genuinely dangerous.
- The fossils and the rock are protected. Nothing leaves the wadi — that is a condition of entry, not a request.
