Wadi El Hitan (el Valle de las Ballenas) es el primer sitio del Patrimonio Mundial natural de la UNESCO en Egipto, y obtuvo esa categoría por algo verdaderamente insólito: los esqueletos fosilizados de algunas de las primeras ballenas, animales que aún conservaban las patas vestigiales de sus antepasados terrestres, dispersos por el desierto abierto 40 millones de años después de su muerte. Un pequeño museo de fósiles en el lugar explica lo que está viendo antes de caminar entre los propios esqueletos.
